Player of the Week (Su12): Week 3 Nominees

Written by - Posted 2012-08-23 23:46 in POTW

A half week with the rain out so some nominees sneak in with less competition. We won’t put an asterisk next to their name if they win, but we might give them a slightly broken keychain.

The rain didn’t stop Joe Thaman from hitting five home runs, that is not a type-o.

Player of the Week (Su12): Week 2 Nominees

Written by - Posted 2012-08-23 23:46 in POTW

Week 2 nominations are up after a slight delay. Tough week for offense as the wind was non-existent.

Our first perfect game of the summer nets Chris Mazur a POTW nomination. His batting wasn’t so great, but he struck out 9 on the weekend, was perfect against Blatz and forced Scared Hitless to go 8 innings before they finally beat him.

CURRENT WEATHER STATUS: POSTPONED

Written by - Posted 2012-08-19 11:09 in News

Commissioner Gallaway postponed the 1:30 PM games and later until a future week after something that looked like rain, but after a careful reading of our permit was definitely NOT rain, began falling during the 12:30 PM games today. It was rumored that actual rain would start coming after the 12:30 games were finished and something that looked like water might start pooling in low areas on the field.

All of the 12:30 games were completed as scheduled. Once lineup cards are exchanged the umpire has control and decision making power over the games. Despite the periods of heavy downfall of whatever the substance was that started during those games, the umpires felt it was safe to finish.

The Commissioner’s office said make-up schedules will be announced soon. Look for the unplayed nine games to be added to Weeks 4-7 rather than tacked on at the end as a Week 8, or 7.5.

Week 3 Preview (Su12): 17 Games

Written by - Posted 2012-08-17 06:58 in News

We have an extra game this week as the slight imperfections of the scheduling software kick in.

The weather also looks like it might cooperate a second week in a row. Low wind, and not too hot.

What excuses will pitchers have who get ejected this week? The rotation of the earth is causing them to miss the board?

DC Twits and Janitors remain unbeaten. Can either continue to survive? A tough weekend for the garbage guys, will the DC Twits sit on top of the world come Monday morning? And if so, for how long?

Answers might come by tuning in to Hard Knocks: Potomac Wiffleball featuring the DC Twits.

FORFEITS FOR SUNDAY

Week 2 Preview (Su12): Hold Perfectly Still

Written by - Posted 2012-08-10 01:16 in News

Week 1 barely survived 30 MPH wind gusts recorded at the airport, which means 60 MPH at Gravelly.

Week 2 the weather calls for 6 MPH wind. Which really means 12 MPH…but that’s the lowest predicted wind we’ve had since perhaps 2005.

Some of the home run hitters are going to discover their true warning track power this week and we might make it a week without having to buy a new tent.

We played 14 of 16 games last week, help us play all 16 by making sure you show up, ON TIME, to help your team out this weekend.

In what could be a preview of one of the two Division Championship Series this postseason, Superman’s Wheelchair will face Scared Hitless on the Blue field at 12:30 PM. It’s also a rematch of the Summer 2011 World Series, which Wheelchair won.

Player of the Week (Su12): Week 1 Nominees

Written by - Posted 2012-08-10 01:15 in POTW

Week 1 turned out to be an offensive week in a number of ways. The wind was purely offensive, with the heat coming in a close second at just oppressive. In another kind of offense, the league batted .417. That’s 120 points higher than the season will supply. Wind blowing out = home runs. Home runs = POTW nominations.

If we could nominate the wind we would. Instead we nominate five guys who took advnatage of the situation and killed some wiffleballs.

We’re continuing the new voting plan from last season. The public vote here will be worth 50% of the final decision. The other 50% will be based on the votes of the league managers.

Special shout out to Will McNally for hitting for the 16th cycle in league history. He gets an automatic nomination here, but clearly won’t be voted in to the All Star Game.

Week 1 Preview (Su12): Hot Fun In The Summertime

Written by - Posted 2012-08-03 00:03 in News

July is over and it’s time to get back to wiffleball action at Gravelly Point.

PLAY BALL!

Make sure to join us Sunday, August 5th, as we kick off Opening Day of the Season. Come early to take part in pre-game ceremonies as we kick off our biggest season ever.

There is a very small chance of rain on Sunday. We’re not allowed to play if it’s “raining”. We’ll certainly wait it out a few minutes if there will be a short burst, then get back to play. So, make sure you head to the fields so you don’t have to forfeit.

There are several ways to find out about cancellations (in order from fastest to slowest):

  • Twitter: follow us @potomacwiffle and set your notification to go to your mobile phone and you’ll get an SMS as soon as a decision is made.
  • Facebook: on Facebook we’ll update the “status” on the PWL page as well as send an “update” to the fans.
  • Phone Line: call the game info line at 800-6-WIFFLE and the automated recording will tell you if the games are on.
  • Website: this website will be updated with a story on the main page announcing the cancellation.
  • Email: if you are signed up on the PWL email list an email will go out with the cancellation.
