Player of the Week (Su10): Week 5 Nominations

Written by - Posted 2010-09-16 21:59 in POTW

Half the games were forfeited this week, making picking three nominees hard. Consideration was giving to three separate nominations each for Matthew Higgins. He had a great week and becomes probably the first person to qualify for such an honor individually three different ways. Two perfect games, one is an automatic nomination, would be nominations #1 and #2. Add to that leading or tied in every batting category this week would certainly give him a batting nomination, taking the #3 position. Alas, we didn’t want to take away your right to vote.

  • Nicholas DiCrosta (Scared Hitless) – DiCrosta had two doubles and a home run to slug 2.000 and hit .750 on the day. He drove in two runs and on the mound only gave up one hit, and no runs, to six batters faced.
  • Matthew Higgins (Master Batters) – Higgins had a career weekend. He threw two perfect games, one of which went extra innings. No one in league history has ever posted two perfect games in order, even over weeks or seasons, let alone on one day. In doing so he struck out 20 batters of the 26 he faced. But, he didn’t just pitch, he basically carried his team’s offense on his shoulders as well. He hit two solo home runs, one in each game, that proved to be the game winning RBI in each. The only thing that could have made them more perfect is if they had been walk-offs. He also doubled twice and hit five singles, hitting .750 and slugging 1.417. Certainly this was a great week for Higgins. While we keep in mind that two games does not make a season, or a career, make…this week at least, belonged to him.
  • Kyle O’Grady (Scared Hitless) – O’Grady finally gets a longed for nomination this week going 3 for 4 with a double and two singles. He hit .750 and slugged 1.000. He drove in a run to help Scared Hitless win their only game and stretch out their lead in the Eastern Division.
