POTW

Player of the Week Award

The Player of the Week Award was established in the Spring 2006 Season to reward the player who had the most outstanding performance that week. The winner is presented a Wiffleball Keychain. The keychain is no longer produced. After buying all available on ebay, the league owns enough to present the award until 2014

The award has always been voted on by the league after players were nominated either through an automatic formula, or by the Commissioner or Deputy Commissioner. The votes were originally cast by emailing the Commissioner. Voting was limited to players in the league. In Week 6 of the 2007 Spring Season, the voting was moved to the website and all players, fans, media, and players families could vote.

Starting with the Spring 2012 Season, the public vote was mixed with a vote of the managers of the league teams to determine the winner. The public vote and the managers vote each count for 50% of the final tally.

Week 2 Nominees - Spring 2007

Written by - Posted 2007-05-03 20:53 in POTW

Due to the late posting of the stats, votes will be accepted this week until 6 PM on Friday, May 4, 2007.

Each week, the three players with the best combined numbers (SLGOBA + F%) will be the nominees for POTW. The league will then vote for the winner.

Players must average 3.1 AB’s per game played to be considered in the stats. That means 6.2 at bats each week, even if you have a forfeited game.

Please email votes to commissioner@potomacwiffleball.org.

POTW: Week 1 – Rookie Denies Veteran Award

Written by - Posted 2007-04-06 15:00 in POTW

Kris Garcia, of the Wiffleblowers, in his debut performance in the PWL captured Player of the Week Honors. Garcia had the lowest numbers in all offensive categories among the three nominees, but his dark horse candidacy was elevated by his off-field ability to turn out voters, including himself. He beat out previous winner and two time nominee, Ben Prochazka, as well as Stephen Zigmund, who after three seasons of play is still looking for his first recognition.

Coby Rudolph, league Kibitzer-in-Chief, quipped, “The Player of the Week monkey is just one that Stephen Zigmund can’t get off his back. I like monkeys, they’re very clean animals. Over the last 3 seasons Stephen has been one of the best players in the league, including some amazing post-season numbers, but he’s just never won the award. He’s the Martin Scorsese of the League, except, he doesn’t direct movies.”

The race for the POTW was marred by negative campaigning on the website, reminding people of Week 3 of the 2006 Summer Season, in which Will Rowland was accused by Ryan Hughes of drowning kittens. The accusation actually gained Rowland votes. [ Read the Story ]

Garcia is presented the official keychain award during Week 2 ceremonies. It is the most valuable possession he owns.

In the third consecutive one vote victory, Will Rowland, of the Salt City Squirrel has been named the Player of the Week for Week 3 despite an aggressive lobbying campaign in which Mr. Rowland’s personal integrity was brought into question.

Will had 6 Home Runs, 14 RBI, a 2.000 slugging percentage, a .571 opponents batting average, a 12.0 ERA and committed no errors in Week 3’s play. In the business, that’s what they call good hit, no pitch.
