POTW

Player of the Week Award

The Player of the Week Award was established in the Spring 2006 Season to reward the player who had the most outstanding performance that week. The winner is presented a Wiffleball Keychain. The keychain is no longer produced. After buying all available on ebay, the league owns enough to present the award until 2014

The award has always been voted on by the league after players were nominated either through an automatic formula, or by the Commissioner or Deputy Commissioner. The votes were originally cast by emailing the Commissioner. Voting was limited to players in the league. In Week 6 of the 2007 Spring Season, the voting was moved to the website and all players, fans, media, and players families could vote.

Starting with the Spring 2012 Season, the public vote was mixed with a vote of the managers of the league teams to determine the winner. The public vote and the managers vote each count for 50% of the final tally.

Player of the Week (Su11): Week 2 Nominees

Written by - Posted 2011-10-04 19:18 in POTW

Two nominations for hitting this week, last week’s winner McNally gets another nod and the Upskirt Fingerblasters cause some problems for teams trying to make the playoffs after Lafler hits four dingers.

For the third week in a row we have three nominees for pitching, but that’s only because two of the four perfect games were thrown by the same guy, Joe Thaman. That same Joe Thaman that broke the consecutive perfect inning streak with 21 and counting.

Dembnicki gets his second nomination with his first perfecto and Alex Filides finally let someone else pitch for NWO, and as a result, Burrell gets a no-no.

Written by - Posted 2011-09-30 11:58 in POTW

William McNally of Suns Out Guns Out won Player of the Week for Week 7.

The rookie tossed his first perfect game and had quite a day at the plate to help his team go 2-0 and get into the playoff hunt.

The keychain will be presented in a special ceremony before Week 2.

Player of the Week (Su11): Week 7 Nominees

Written by - Posted 2011-09-28 22:15 in POTW

When it rains it pours and we have three more perfect games this week. Including the second in a row for Nicholas DiCrosta, and first time efforts for Anthony Morin and rookie William McNally.

The lack of wind and the long grass continued to slow offense and smal ball is dominating those games that don’t got many, many extra innings.

All of these teams are in contention in large part due to their 2-0 weekends led by these players.

Player of the Week (Su11): Week 6

Written by - Posted 2011-09-23 12:11 in POTW

David Bransfield won Player of the Week honors for Week 6.

When asked about his free agent addition to NWO, manager Alex Filides said, “it’s all about the managing.”

Player of the Week (Su11): Week 6 Nominees

Written by - Posted 2011-09-20 17:57 in POTW

Three perfect games this week made three of the nominees automatic. It also caused us to have to add pitching stats to the chart (ugh).

Fortunately, no hitters can cry foul since those three pitchers also deserved nominations for their bats as well. You can count them as double nominees if you want.

We also try to avoid multiple nominees from the same team, but it just wasn’t possible. As painful as it is, Joey Davis deserves a chance to get your vote. Sure, Scared Hitless got to stat pad with two games against the garbage of the league Garbage Plates, but that’s what happens sometimes.

Player of the Week (Su11): Week 5

Written by - Posted 2011-09-16 11:58 in POTW

Christopher Smyth of the Master Batters won Player of the Week honors for Week 5.

His three homers almost kept the Master Batters from embarrassing themselves. Almost.

169 votes were cast, the biggest tally of the season so far.

It’s the first keychain for Smyth, who will receive the award in a pre-game ceremony if we every play wiffleball again.

Player of the Week (Su11): Week 5 Nominees

Written by - Posted 2011-09-13 22:53 in POTW

The offense was a little rusty after three weeks off and it didn’t help that for most of the games there wasn’t a bit of wind. Turns out most of the league’s home run power is actualy warning track power when the wind is under 5 MPH blowing directly out.

Greg Hudson and Steven Esperon lock up their second noms this season, becoming the 3rd and 4th players to hog the nominations with 2 out of 3 weeks. Hudson arguably could have been nominated each week, barely losing the nod Week 3 to teammate and eventual winner Alex Cochran. It could be that some of these sophomores can play wiffleball.

Matt Dreyfus returns to the nomination list this week and if he doesn’t win will become the current co-leader in nominations without a win, at 5. Still short of Alex Filides’ record of 8, but not a good crowd to be in.

Player of the Week (Su11): Week 3

Written by - Posted 2011-08-26 12:00 in POTW

Alex Cochran of DC Twits won Player of the Week honors for Week 3.

The DC Twits prove once again that their voting turnout operation is second to none, even if their players are second to many.

It’s the first keychain for Cochran, who will receive the award in a pre-game ceremony if we every play wiffleball again.

Player of the Week (Su11): Week 3 Nominees

Wind blowing out on all fields made it a hitters day. Not that we’d nominate a pitcher anyway, but this made it a little easier.

The Wheelchair boys continue to dominate, really tough decisions for spots 3 to 5 this week.
