Player of the Week Award

The Player of the Week Award was established in the Spring 2006 Season to reward the player who had the most outstanding performance that week. The winner is presented a Wiffleball Keychain. The keychain is no longer produced. After buying all available on ebay, the league owns enough to present the award until 2014

The award has always been voted on by the league after players were nominated either through an automatic formula, or by the Commissioner or Deputy Commissioner. The votes were originally cast by emailing the Commissioner. Voting was limited to players in the league. In Week 6 of the 2007 Spring Season, the voting was moved to the website and all players, fans, media, and players families could vote.

Starting with the Spring 2012 Season, the public vote was mixed with a vote of the managers of the league teams to determine the winner. The public vote and the managers vote each count for 50% of the final tally.

Another bad week at the plate, if only batters had the strike board to blame. Only four dingers all week, and the two guys that did that are below.

VOTES ARE DUE BY FRIDAY AT NOON

  • Matt Dreyfus (Canvassers): Dreyfus gets his first nomination of the summer and his first as a member of the Canvassers, the only remaining unbeaten team. Even though David Gross got the lone GWRBI in the game, Dreyfus was 3-6 batting leadoff and scored the game’s only run. He singled, doubled, and tripled. Any other week, a homer might have been possible for the cycle, but with a forfeit, 1 run was good enough for 2-0 to sit on top of the East.
  • Kris Garcia (Rough Riders): Garcia gets his second nomination in a row, hitting two homers and driving in three runs and suddenly he’s back on the list for two the three batting triple crown categories. Unfortunately, it wasn’t enough to get 2 W’s, and the Riders may soon be eliminated from October, sitting at 3-5 over half way through the season.
  • Daniel Sullivan (Mr. Party’s Waddle): The mascot, the notorious Mr. Party, finally showed up this week as did Waddle’s manager, Dan Sullivan. He hit 50% of the homers this week, and drove in five runs on his way to slugging 1.250 in his debut appearance. On the mound, he tossed six innings without giving up a run and struck out three. With a forfeit, his squad went 2-0, and if he keeps playing this way, and the penguin keeps coming, they might find their way into the playoffs.

Tony Ragano of Clubber Lang picked up his career fourth POTW award this week.

He ties Tony Cani for second place on the all-time list of keychains, behind Stephen Zigmund’s seven.

The league hit .237 this week, and only slugged .337, with four homers. With those kind of low offensive numbers, two great pitching performances dominate the nominations this week.

VOTES ARE DUE BY FRIDAY AT NOON

  • Dallas Brown (Joe Buck Yourself): The rookie Brown tossed a perfect game, a guaranteed nomination, and struck out five, but Joe Buck Yourself still settled for a 1-1 week.
  • Kris Garcia (Rough Riders): Garcia wasn’t exactly at his triple crown level best, but he managed to hit a homer and drive in five runs to lead the Rough Riders to a 2-0 weekend and another nomination.
  • Tony Ragano (Clubber Lang): Ragano threw a no-hitter, but didn’t get his third career perfect game thanks to a defensive error. In a bad week for offense, a no-hitter is good enough for a nomination, not to mention Ragano’s 6-0 start and 16 strikeouts this weekend.

Player of the Week (Su09): Week 2

By a razor thin margin Jesse Contario of Flaglove picked up Player of the Week honors for Week 2.

Contario hit three homers, including the season’s first walk-off to help even up Flaglove’s record at 2-2.

There were 9 home runs hit during Week 1, and 29 hit during Week 2. Three guys each had three a piece, getting them POTW nominations this week.

Filides is a fourth time nominee, but has never won. This could be his time, though teammate Bernard might split the vote letting the Flaglove rookie pickup some hardware.

VOTES ARE DUE BY FRIDAY AT NOON

  • Jesse Contario (Flaglove): Contario hit .750 with two doubles and drove in 6 with his three roundtrippers.
  • Alexander Filides (Clubber Lang): Filides hit .615 with three doubles and drove in 5 runs to go along with his three dingers.
  • John Bernard (Clubber Lang): Bernard hit .667 and drove in 5 runs to go along with his three homers.

Mike Lemaire of the ho-hum named team Joe Buck Yourself won Player of the Week honors for Week 1.

Lemaire won’t be back for Week 2 games, so his keychain will be presented as a gift to Washington, DC area homeless to help them keep track of their keys.

No clear favorites this week for nominees or winners. Some of the better performances at the plate (it’s all about hitting right?) were by players who’s team lost both games.

  • Votes are Due at NOON on FRIDAY.

Week 1 Nominees:

  • Nicholas DiCrosta (Canvassers): DiCrosta is no stranger to POTW hardware, and earns an automatic nomination this week for tossing a perfect game against the Rough Riders. His 2-0 record from the mound led the Canvassers to their best start in the last few seasons.
  • Alexander Filides (Clubber Lang): Filides drove in seven runs with two homers as he got Clubber Lang off to a 2-0 start. He slugged 1.100 and hit .400 and is still looking for his first keychain.
  • Mike Lemaire (Joe Buck Yourself): Lemaire had a strong rookie debut, leading his team to two wins and hitting the cycle for the weekend. He drove in four runs, hit .600 and slugged 1.200.

Player of the Week (Sp09): Week 7

Written by - Posted 2009-07-04 01:20 in POTW

Tony Ragano gets his third POTW award this week. He didn’t deserve it, but he isn’t the first Republican to steal an election. Strike outs and voting…two things Tony does early and often.

Player of the Week (Sp09): Week 7 Nominees

Written by - Posted 2009-07-01 02:11 in POTW

With the close of the regular season, this is last week of voting for weekly honors. Year end awards such as Most Valuable Player, the Cy Young Award, and Rookie of the Year wil be voted on after the playoffs.

We have four nominees this week…not that we like breaking our own rules…but it became a tradition that if you tossed a perfect game, you got a nomination. That was before perfect games became more common than STD’s in the league locker room. However, to honor it, we nominated both pitchers for their accomplishment even though we didn’t want to. If you want to consider them each a one-half nominee, we’re ok with that.

  • Votes are Due at NOON on FRIDAY.

Week 7 Nominees:

  • Matt Dreyfus (Scared Hitless): Dreyfus had a strong Week 4 and returned to form this week mounting a late challenge to the home run title. He hit seven homers and drove in twelve runs as Scared Hitless picked up two important wins then celebrated with a champagne (or was it sparking wine) shower.
  • Kris Garcia (Catalista Revolucion): Garcia was under pressure and needed RBI and Home Runs to grab the Triple Crown title this week, and he answered. He hit five homers and drove in twelve to lead the league in all categories. As an added bonus, he was perfect in six innings pitched, though two run-rule games didn’t count as an official perfect game.
  • Tony Ragano (Clubber Lang): Ragano gets his third nomination of the season for tossing his second perfect game of this year. He struck out eight and only gave up one hit as Clubber Lang won their final two games.
  • Jacob Tomko (Blandsford Barnburners): Tomko tossed his second perfect game of the season this Sunday against the Canvassers. He struck out ten batters, and only gave up four hits, which was barely enough to help his team win two games considering he was 1 for 11 in the batters box.
