Player of the Week Award

The Player of the Week Award was established in the Spring 2006 Season to reward the player who had the most outstanding performance that week. The winner is presented a Wiffleball Keychain. The keychain is no longer produced. After buying all available on ebay, the league owns enough to present the award until 2014

The award has always been voted on by the league after players were nominated either through an automatic formula, or by the Commissioner or Deputy Commissioner. The votes were originally cast by emailing the Commissioner. Voting was limited to players in the league. In Week 6 of the 2007 Spring Season, the voting was moved to the website and all players, fans, media, and players families could vote.

Starting with the Spring 2012 Season, the public vote was mixed with a vote of the managers of the league teams to determine the winner. The public vote and the managers vote each count for 50% of the final tally.

Player of the Week (Sp09): Week 1

Written by - Posted 2009-04-26 02:02 in POTW

Stephen Zigmund was named Player of the Week for the first week of play during the Spring 2009 Season.

This is Zigmund’s seventh keychain, but his first win in a year, with Spring 2008 Week 1 his last.

The fewest number of votes were cast in this race since online voting began in 2007. Nominees were posted on Friday prior to the This Week in Wiffleball (TWIF) weekly email with a deadline of 10 PM Saturday night.

In addition to the abbreviated voting time, there were complaints from league members about the nominees, or rather, who didn’t get nominated. The nominees were all previous multiple winners and league veterans. However, with a huge number of rookies this season, the new comers are looking to make their mark quickly.

Rookie pitcher for the Wackazoids Brenna Kaminski appeared in all three of the pitching league leaders her first week in the show, but didn’t get a nomination. In a run rule pouding the Blandsford Barnburners Jack Shannon and Jim Shannon stood out at the plate, and hurler Jacob Tomko tossed what might be a perfect game, all without nomination.

Player of the Week (Sp09): Week 1 Nominees

Each week three nominess will be announced for Player of the Week. The league, fans, and press will vote for the winner.

Winners receive a very limited edition wiffleball keychain.

Votes are Due at 10 PM on Saturday.

This weeks nominees have all won the award at least one time. Maybe this weekend we can share the love a little more.

Week 1 Nominees:

  • Nicholas DiCrosta (Scared Hitless): DiCrosta didn’t do any one thing spectacular opening week, but he gave a solid performance at bat and on the mound earning him another nomination. He lead his team to a 2-0 start, the only undefeated team in the league, and finds himself on the league leaders in two batting categories (AVG and RBI) and all three pitching categories (OBA, ERA, and SO).
  • Kris Garcia (Catalista Revoucion): Garcia had six homers on opening weekend and even though the wind assisted, a dinger is still a dinger, and it’s enough to get him nominated this week. He also leads the league in RBI, and though his team was 1-1, and his pitching was soft, he deserves a shot at his second keychain.
  • Stephen Zigmund (Canvassers): Zigmund is making a play for another triple crown, and finds himself leading in average, but second to Garcia in HR and RBI, numbers we know won’t hold up. He managed four homers as his team went 1-1, but we’ll have to see if he can hold off the charge of the rookies for the crown this season.

NOTE: The Shannon boys, rookies from the Barnburners, put on an impressive hitting display in their one inning of work this week. Unfortunately, they didn’t get enough plate appearances to be considered this week due to a forfeit and a one-inning run rule blowout.
