POTW

Player of the Week Award

The Player of the Week Award was established in the Spring 2006 Season to reward the player who had the most outstanding performance that week. The winner is presented a Wiffleball Keychain. The keychain is no longer produced. After buying all available on ebay, the league owns enough to present the award until 2014

The award has always been voted on by the league after players were nominated either through an automatic formula, or by the Commissioner or Deputy Commissioner. The votes were originally cast by emailing the Commissioner. Voting was limited to players in the league. In Week 6 of the 2007 Spring Season, the voting was moved to the website and all players, fans, media, and players families could vote.

Starting with the Spring 2012 Season, the public vote was mixed with a vote of the managers of the league teams to determine the winner. The public vote and the managers vote each count for 50% of the final tally.

Four automatic nominations this week with three perfect games and one cycle. Add to that mix, an overlooked rookie, if you believe his manager, who breaks through with his first nomination.

  • Joseph Thaman is no longer tied with Nicholas DiCrosta for the most nominations all time, he’s back alone with his 21st, he has 4 wins. Nominated for his 12th perfect game, he’s also leading the league in strikeouts thanks to 12 more this weekend, with a 0.00 ERA and .143 OBA for Wheelchair’s two wins.
  • Jim Shannon becomes the second player in history to hit for the cycle more than once. The two time Triple Crown winner has been shown up by his twin brother this season in HR and RBI, but he’s still leading the league in AVG. This week he hit four dingers and slugged 2.357 to get three wins for the #1 ranked Barnburners, and for his 9th nomination, he’s won once.
  • Matt Gagnon of the Moose Knuckles gets a second consecutive nomination this week (like Thaman and Shannon) as his team finally got over .500 behind a perfect game, his second against the Canvassers. He struck out 14 this week, with an ERA of 0.50 and OBA of .154 as he picks up his 6th nomination, he has one win from before people got to know him.
  • Neil Kearns who is really the backup pitcher for Besley Bashers scores the win in the third perfect game of the day to pickup his first nomination. He didn’t finish the game, so Alex Cohn came in for two inning save to keep the perfecto. Kearns struck out 3, with a 1.71 ERA on the weekend allowing opponents to hit .211.
  • Joel Brunk gets our lone non-automatic nomination this week, his first, despite having a very solid rookie campaign to date. Minutes after his manager complained he was being overlooked as a Rookie of the Year candidate, Brunk hit four homers, hit .667 and slugged 2.500 despite facing Thaman in his second game.

Jack Shannon of the Blandsford Barnburners won Player of the Week for Week 4.

Player of the Week: Week 4 Nominees (Sp13)

It’s getting to the playoff push time of year again. Where the clutch players start to show themselves and the playoff picture becomes clear. This week, Jack Shannon pitched a perfect game to get an automatic bid and the rest of the nominees are hitting the ball all over the place.

  • Joe Thaman is up for POTW again (19 nominations). It’s no wonder Superman’s Wheelchair are always in the hunt with this guy on the mound and a 2.750 OPS this week; with 3 homeruns and 4 RBIs.
  • Jack Shannon is our only automatic nomination of the week, although he would’ve been nominated no matter what. Somehow this is only Jack’s 7th POTW nomination. Jack pitched a perfecto against Ha’Chi to start the Barnburner’s day. Jack then went on to hit 6 home runs, with an OPS of 2.333.
  • Jim Shannon is making things difficult for the rest of the league to have any confidence when facing the Barnburners. He batted .800 for the week, with an OPS of 1.800 in 3 games. Jim also pitched a shutout against the Janitors.
  • Matt Gagnon of the Moose Knuckles turned things around this week, breaking out of his slump in a big way. Hitting 3 doubles, a home run, and 4 RBIs, Gagnon tallied an OPS of 2.000 to help Moose stay at .500.
  • Jack Rems had one game this week — statistically though, he had 4.5 games. In a 28 inning losing effort game against the Natty Brohs, Jack had 13 hits in one game (a new record!), batted .500, and an OPS of 1.154. Jack’s 13 hits more than doubled the Dupont Circle Jerks total hits that game (6).

Dave Lucadamo of Ha’chi Mountaineers won Player of the Week for Week 3.

Player of the Week: Week 3 Nominees (Sp13)

Written by - Posted 2013-05-01 11:19 in POTW

Well in comparison to last week, Week 3 was an offensive explosion. Had some tough decisions to make in regards to player of the week. Even though most of these stats happened on the blue field, where the wind carried a bloop single 200 feet.

  • Dave Lucadamo from Ha’chi Mountaineers is up for his 2nd career nomination. In week 3, he had 5 home runs and 7 RBIs – and had an OPS of 3.091 (!). He’s leading Ha’chi in just about every offensive category (and has only played 2 of the 3 weeks), helping them stay atop the competitive West.
  • Joe Thaman – ol’ faithful it seems every year for Superman’s Wheelchair, tallying his 18th POTW nomination! While he didn’t have his two best pitching performances, he made up for it with his bat, breaking out of his “slump.” With 3 home runs, 6 RBIs, and 2.375 OPS, Thaman helped keep Superman undefeated.
  • Alex Cohn of the rookies Besley Bashers gets his first nomination. In 3 games, Cohn was on fire against Nasty Boys, Ha’Chi, and Superman’s Wheelchair – batting .692. Not only that, he hit 4 home runs and had 5 RBIs.
  • I’m not sure how Superman’s Wheelchair were able to grab free agent Todd Ogg so quietly, but what a pickup. With an OPS of 2.375, Ogg hit just about everything in Week 3. Ogg knocked in 6 RBIs with 3 home runs, which was key for Superman this past week in their offensive battles.
  • This is Jack Rems first year with PWL, and thus his first POTW nomination – proving to be a key addition for the Natty Brohs. In Week 3 he batted .545, 4 home runs, and 6 RBIs. It’s obvious he’s the best player on Natty Brohs, we’ll see how he can help them finish the year strong.

Player of the Week: Week 2 Nominees (Sp13)

Written by - Posted 2013-04-23 22:54 in POTW

We’re at week two, and as we said before, power numbers are way down. Whether attributed to the lack of wind blowing out or just the pitchers are getting better? Who knows. I do know one thing — it’s Player of the Week Nomination time.

Only one automatic nomination this week as opposed to last week with all 5 — seems like it’s a battle of the batting averages now! Let’s hope the power returns next week.

  • Alex Brown of the Canvassers helped his team on their triple header by batting .455 with an OPS of 1.273. Not to mention he had a homerun, 2 RBIs, and 3 runs.
  • Nicolas West has made 7th Linning Stretch into a team not to be taken lightly at 3-1. Not only has West been pitching well for 7th Linning, but he batted .625 with an OPS of 1.75 — with 2 double and 1 triple.
  • Don McClintock has stepped up big for the Gumballers in the pitching role. Starting both games this past week and only giving up 3 total runs in 2 games. Not only that, he went a perfect 5-5 against Scared Hitless. Batting .600 for the week with an OPS of 1.200, McClintock is becoming a key player for the Gumballers.
  • Zach Carter of the Master Batters wasn’t here for the first week — but I know they’ll want him there for week 3 after his Spring 2013 debut. Zach helped keep the Master Batters undefeated (4-0) by batting .625 with an OPS of 1.625 — hitting 3 doubles.
  • Trevor Fedie is our only automatic bid of the week, hitting for the cycle for the new team Porkchop Sandwiches (1-4). Trevor only batted .250, but his cycle was enough to beat the Canvassers and give the Porkchop Sandwiches their first win of the year!

Player of the Week: Week 1 (Sp13)

Jeffrey Nitto of the Gumballers won Player of the Week for Week 1.

Player of the Week: Week 1 Nominees (Sp13)

Written by - Posted 2013-04-17 21:11 in POTW

Cycles and Perfect Games this week…all automatic nominations…we don’t even have decisions to make.

Four pitchers get nominated this week after four perfect games to kick off the season. The wind was coming in for the early games, and almost non-existent late, including for the three 4:30 games which were all perfect. So…the hitters really can’t blame the wind for hitting .275 opening week.

  • Andrew Flowers of the Moose Knuckles hits for the cycle, 21st in league history, to kick off his Spring season. He is also leading the league in Total Bases in the early going, and although his game tying home run was robbed by fellow nominee Nitto, he helped keep the Moose Knuckles at a .500 start. Flowers has one nomination, but no wins.
  • Nicholas DiCrosta no hit the Canvassers on a red field with some wind blowing out. He escaped a couple of warning track shots early, then dominated from the mound, and managed to keep Alex Filides from getting ejected from the game. DiCrosta has 19 nominations and 4 wins. He’s the all time career leader in nominations, and with a fifth win would be tied for second in wins with Tony Ragano.
  • Jeffrey Nitto continued his Cy Young winning rookie season with a perfect sophomore start, helping his team beat the rival Moose Knuckles by tossing four scoreless innings and keeping the game tying home run in the ballpark, despite not getting a decision, then getting the perfecto against the offensively bi-polar Nasty Boys. Nitto has one career nomination and win.
  • Matt Gagnon was perfect against the Natty Brohs as the Moose Knuckles took advantage and fully padded their stats against the team returning after a season off. Gagnon has three nominations and managed one win before the league got to know him.
  • Stephen Crawford shut down the Janitors in his third game, as both he and the Twits posted a 2-1 start to their season defending their #3 seed from last season. Crawford has three career nominations, but has never claimed a keychain.
