POTW

Player of the Week Award

The Player of the Week Award was established in the Spring 2006 Season to reward the player who had the most outstanding performance that week. The winner is presented a Wiffleball Keychain. The keychain is no longer produced. After buying all available on ebay, the league owns enough to present the award until 2014

The award has always been voted on by the league after players were nominated either through an automatic formula, or by the Commissioner or Deputy Commissioner. The votes were originally cast by emailing the Commissioner. Voting was limited to players in the league. In Week 6 of the 2007 Spring Season, the voting was moved to the website and all players, fans, media, and players families could vote.

Starting with the Spring 2012 Season, the public vote was mixed with a vote of the managers of the league teams to determine the winner. The public vote and the managers vote each count for 50% of the final tally.

Alex Filides of Scared Hitless squeezed out a victory for his second Player of the Week keychain.

Filides tied for the top honors in the Managers vote, and was second in the public voting. Adriano DeSorrento dominated in the public vote but fell to third place in the Manager’s choice.

Player of the Week (Su12): Week 7 Nominees

Written by - Posted 2012-09-26 22:59 in POTW

Three pitchers get nominated this week after three perfect games. In order to help one of them win we’ve nominated the two most unlikable guys in the league on the batting side.

Alex Filides you know and hate. Hated him when he was on Clubber Lang, hated him when he was on NWO, hate him now that he’s on Scared Hitless. This is his 14th nomination, he’s won one time. But, he basically hit the crap out of the ball this weekend against some pretty weak teams.

Andrew Martin hung up the cleats a few years ago to become head scorekeeper. He filled in as a guest player for Superman’s Wheelchair and ended up having quite a week. He’s officially nominated for becoming the second player this season, and 17th in history, to hit for the cycle, but even without the automatic he would have earned a batting nod. He has one previous nomination, no wins.

Adriano DeSorrento is one of the perfect game guys getting a pitching nod but his batting numbers were NOT to be ignored so we ended up listing him in both places. He earns a nomination both ways this week. DeSorrento has three nominations, including two others this Summer, but no wins.

Gagnon and Crawford are familiar faces here as well, third nomination for both of them. Gagnon snuck a win in last season before we got to know him.

Player of the Week (Su12): Week 6 Nominees

Written by - Posted 2012-09-19 21:13 in POTW

Benjamin Turner went yard four times. Yeah, it wasn’t even with the wind blowing out each time. We can’t explain it either. He earns his second nomination.

Longtime veteran Patrick Browning came out of retirement and flew in as a guest player and ended up picking up his third nomination. The first was in the 2008, the second was in 2011. Browning hit three bombs, maybe had a 4th blocked by an umpire and drove in five runs.

Matt Gagnon picked up a keychain during his rookie campaign last season, but it became clear soon after that his teammates were the real stars on this team. Gagnon gets his second nomination with an automatic nod by tossing a perfect game. He also gave up just one hit, a controversial hit, which Gagnon has obviously challenged, in his second game of the day.

Michael Burns gets his fourth nomination and his second this season and rookie Michael Cohen earns his first to round out the top five.

Player of the Week (Su12): Week 5 Nominees

Written by - Posted 2012-09-19 20:37 in POTW

Sam Johnson tosses a perfect game to get the automatic nomation, his second. He previously won a keychain Week 3 of the Spring 2011 season.

He joins his brother and teammate Andrew Johnson who earns his third nod the traditional way, but is still looking for his first win.

Nicholas DiCrosta gets his 19th nomination, to give him the all time record for nominations alone, besting Joe Thaman by one. He has won four times.

Tim Qua of Nasty Boys sneaks in his second nomination and Mark Tegethoff, who we’re pretty sure is a guest player, rounds out the five.

Player of the Week (Su12): Week 4

Written by - Posted 2012-09-01 22:43 in POTW

Jeffrey Nitto of Gumballers wins player of the week honors for Week 4.

Nitto is the second rookie to win this season. He threw a perfect game and led the Gumballers to three wins and the lead in the Eastern Division standings.

Nitto was the top choice of both the managers and the public vote.

The keychain will be presented in a pre-game ceremony Week 5.

Player of the Week (Su12): Week 4 Nominees

Written by - Posted 2012-08-31 10:11 in POTW

Two perfect games this week put pitchers on the nomination list. Nitto was denied a perfecto earlier in the season when his teammates run-ruled the opponents, but goes the full six this weekend.

This is Joseph Thaman’s 18th nomination for Player of the Week, tying him for first place on the all time nomination list with Nicholas DiCrosta. Both players have won four times, and are tied for third on the all time win list with Kris Garcia and Tony Cani. They trail Stephen Zigmund (7 wins) and Tony Ragano (5 wins).

Player of the Week (Su12): Week 3

Written by - Posted 2012-08-25 22:20 in POTW

Joe Thaman of Superman’s Wheelchair won yet another Player of the Week award claiming honors for Week 3.

Thaman was the clear choice of the managers, but was almost denied his most recent award by the public vote which favored two players who seem to be more well liked (at least among their friends who they could get to vote online) but have less impressive credentials.

After a last minute surge in voting, Andrew Zarobila and Howard Krasilovsky ended up tied for top vote getter in the public voting. The tie, rather than one clear winner, ultimately allowed Thaman to pick up the deserved keychain.

The award will be presented in a pre-game ceremony during Week

Player of the Week (Su12): Week 2

Written by - Posted 2012-08-25 22:17 in POTW

Rookie Drew Reid of the Crooked Gunsels won Player of the Week honors for Week 2.

Reid was the runner up in the public vote but impressed the Managers enough to just sneak by guest player Dave Lucadomo for the keychain.

The award will be presented in a pre-game ceremony during Week 4.
