POTW

Player of the Week Award

The Player of the Week Award was established in the Spring 2006 Season to reward the player who had the most outstanding performance that week. The winner is presented a Wiffleball Keychain. The keychain is no longer produced. After buying all available on ebay, the league owns enough to present the award until 2014

The award has always been voted on by the league after players were nominated either through an automatic formula, or by the Commissioner or Deputy Commissioner. The votes were originally cast by emailing the Commissioner. Voting was limited to players in the league. In Week 6 of the 2007 Spring Season, the voting was moved to the website and all players, fans, media, and players families could vote.

Starting with the Spring 2012 Season, the public vote was mixed with a vote of the managers of the league teams to determine the winner. The public vote and the managers vote each count for 50% of the final tally.

Player of the Week (Sp12): Week 5

Written by - Posted 2012-05-25 20:14 in POTW

Richard Rho of NWO won Player of the Week Honors for Week 5.

Rho did not receive first preference from either the public of the managers, but had strong enough support in both to claim the victory. This is the first time that has happened since the voting process was changed.

The limited edition keychain will be presented in a special pre-game ceremony before Week 7.

Player of the Week (Sp12): Week 5 Nominees

Written by - Posted 2012-05-23 23:14 in POTW

We’re a week late in voting but the off week for Memorial Day gives us a chance to get caught up. One automatic pitcher nomination this week for a perfect game. This was a weird week, 5 pitcher ejection forfeits, wind blowing so hard out on Blue field that a foul out to the catcher was a home run.

Player of the Week (Sp12): Week 4

Written by - Posted 2012-05-13 06:50 in POTW

Matt Gagnon of the Moose Knuckles won Player of the Week Honors for Week 4. He was the preference of public voting and came in second with the managers.

Gagnon and the Moose Knuckles are currently sitting in the #2 overall seed position behind scrappy play and solid pitching, including a perfect game by Gagnon himself.

Yeah, this is going to make these rookies unbearable.

The limited edition keychain will be presented in a special pre-game ceremony before Week 4.

Three more perfect games steal most of the nominations this week. Don’t be confused by their hitting stats being listed, Thaman, Gagnon and Tomko were definitely nominated for their PITCHING not HITTING this week.

Garcia gets his second consecutive nomination after tossing a perfect game last week and Alex Filides, the guy you love to hate makes another appearance.

Player of the Week (Sp12): Week 3

Written by - Posted 2012-05-05 10:37 in POTW

Kevin Higman of the Janitors won Player of the Week Honors for Week 3.

As far as we can remember, he’s the first Janitor to do anything interesting.

Higman was the consensus choice of both the public voting and the managers after hitting .727 and slugging 1.545 with two doubles, two triples and a home run.

He led the Janitors to their first win of the season over the Have Fun Out Theres.

The limited edition keychain will be presented in a special pre-game ceremony before Week 4.

Player of the Week (Sp12): Week 1

Written by - Posted 2012-05-04 16:22 in POTW

Joe Thaman of Superman’s Wheelchair won Player of the Week Honors for Week 1.

This was the first week that that public vote was balanced with a vote of the PWL Managers. Thaman came in tied for second in the public vote to Benjamin Turner of the Garbage Plates who ran a strong campaign collecting 59% of the website tally.

One of the previous complaints about the online voting was that is was more indicative of who could run a web-based turnout program than perform on the field. The Managers vote helps to balance out a campaign of this nature. 16 of the 20 Managers voted this week.

A perfect game is an automatic nomination for a pitcher. We had two this week, Thaman’s 9th and Garcia’s 3rd. We also had one last week, but it involved two pitchers, so it’s on the Perfect Game page, but they didn’t get a nomination last week.

Player of the Week (Sp12): Week 1 Nominees

Written by - Posted 2012-05-02 01:44 in POTW

Sorry for the delay in POTW posting for Week 1. We’re getting caught up, but don’t worry, there are plenty of limited edition keychains left.

No rookies broke through Week 1, unless you count the “wind” as a rookie.

We are rolling out a new voting procedure as a test this season. There will still be an open vote on this website for Player of the Week, but there will also be a closed manager’s vote. The results of the two will be equally weighted to determine the winner. This will give every team one vote, in addition to allowing any fans, friends, family or co-workers the chance to still vote for you from home.

Player of the Week (Su11): Week 4

Written by - Posted 2011-10-14 12:05 in POTW

James Lenihan led the Canvassers to a 3-0 weekend and the #3 seed in the playoffs. He wins Player of the Week honors for his trouble.

Maybe now he’ll stop bitching that we scored his “inside the park homer” as a double.

Player of the Week (Su11): Week 4 Nominees

Written by - Posted 2011-10-11 18:22 in POTW

Neal Kovach becomes the second guy this season to toss two perfect games in one day. He came in to save the other team win pushing the Mountaineers into their first post-season. He is also our first nominee with a negative FIP for the week, throwing 14 perfect innings with 23 K’s.

Kovach teammate Andrew Johnson just barely edges out Sam Johnson (no relation?) to earn his second nomination this season as part of the Ha’chi operation.

Nicholas DiCrosta was pretty hung over but he was able to beat other nominee Alex Filides and eliminate NWO, denying them post-season for the first time after two appearances.

Lenihan helped the other 3-0 team on the day as the Canvassers claimed the South and the #3 seed in post-season on his first dinger. He really wanted one of those doubles scored a triple so he could claim the cycle, but alas, he got to third on a throw.
