The Dupont Circle Jerks return for a fourth consecutive season in the PWL. After going 16-26 through the team's first three seasons, the Jerks dump three-term manager and team founder John Hamlett and replace him with franchise iron horse Brett Shegogue. In his first season at the helm, Shegogue will look to improve upon the team's 7-7 record from the spring season. Asked if he feels any pressure to fill Hamlett's managerial shoes and get the team above the .500 hump, Brett cooly replied "anything John can do, I can do better." When questioned further, Shegogue backtracked, saying "except fill out a tank top."
Shegogue brings with him a streak of 41 consecutive games played and a nearly 100% success rate in showing up sans hangover. He also leads the Jerks with 51 hits, 17 doubles, 22 runs scored, and a .305 career batting average. Brett has also developed into an important arm in the rotation, throwing the second most innings on the team last season while posting a 1.87 ERA with 6.1 strikeouts per six innings, although there remain serious concerns about his ability to stay on the mound without being ejected.
Tom Kelley returns for his third consecutive season and sports a .275 career batting average with 22 hits in his first two seasons. When asked about his stratospheric, league-leading groundout rate, Tom replied "maybe Gallaway shouldn't be so lazy about cutting the grass? Then those groundouts would be hits and I'd be batting .400."
Tom Schwarting is back for his fourth season as well. With a .242 career batting average and a .429 career slugging percentage, after hitting .353 and slugging .706 in his first season during spring 2012, Tom is always fielding questions about why he has been unable to replicate the success of his rookie campaign. Tom is quoted saying "look I turned 30 during that season. My life has been in a downhill spiral ever since. You think you've seen my rock bottom? You haven't seen my rock bottom. Maybe I play too much soccer?"
Stephen Cox is also back and will look to build upon his best season at the plate so far in spring 2013 when he batted .250 with 6 runs scored and 6 driven in. He'll also be counted on for some of the inning load on the mound as he has a respectable 2.29 ERA in 34 career innings pitched, including his nifty 0.96 ERA this past season. When asked about his sometimes streaky performance at the plate and in the field, Cox only shrugged and mumbled something unquotable about an alcohol problem and an online gambling addiction.
Andy Hill is back for his second season with the Jerks. After a bit of a slump to begin his PWL career, Andy finished strong with a .300 average and .500 slugging percentage over the final four games of his rookie season. Asked about the outlook for his sophomore campaign, Andy replied "I'm the biggest dude on the team. Home runs are going to be my thing this year. I'm going to make it rain."
Lastly, disgraced former manager John Hamlett will be returning to the team in a probationary part-time status. While Hamlett does lead the Jerks in many career statistical categories (HR, RBI, SLG, and OPS as a hitter and GS, SHO, IP, ERA, OBA, SO, and Wins as a pitcher), his competence to run the team has been called into question by many teammates, past and former, as well as the sportswriters covering the PWL. Hamlett could not be found to comment, but his Facebook status updates seem to indicate that he's really excited about the birth of the royal baby.
With new leadership and (for the second straight season) new uniforms, the Jerks are back and poised to make another strong push for the playoffs!
