The Blandsford Barnburners, of Manassas, VA died on their home field, surrounded by her PWL opponents and fans on June 21, 2015. They were 7 years old.
The Barnburners are survived by their playful but potentially alcoholic children; The Wolfpack of Arlington, VA, and the Moose Knuckles of somewhere in Maryland.
The Barnburners were born in August of 1995 in Manassas, VA to Jack and Jim Shannon along with their brothers, Ty Fletcher, Colin Gannon, and Jacob Tomko. The 5 boys were unstoppable from an early age, winning the World Series in their first 5 seasons. The life of the Barnburners was not without heartache though, as the team suffered a traumatizing loss in the Spring of 2014. On June 22, the team's innocence was robbed of it when the DC Twits and the PWL conspired to construct an elaborate scheme to strip them of their perfections. The previous night, the league commissioner invited the Shannon twins, the team's unquestioned leaders, to a Nationals game in the "President's Club." Whereupon they were told to drink and drink and drink (it was "free", the commissioner said). So drink they did. Awaking in an alcohol induced funk, the Barnburners showed up early to Gravelly Point only to find that the coup had already been set in motion. The PWL commissioner required, under the threat of withholding future compensation, two of the Barnburners best players to play a fast pitch "scrimmage" against the nation's best wiffleball team. These two players were rode to the point of exhaustion. The Twits, privy to the conspiracy, arrived with shit eating grins crawling across their lips. Upon seeing that the Shannon twins were already calling each other pussies and throwing bats at each other before the games even started, they knew the scheme had worked. It was a near deadly blow to the franchise. But after having a moment of zen while sitting in its idling car, the franchise decided to take the keys out of the ignition and open the garage door. It was determined to get healthy, exact revenge (which it did on 4/26/15), and have their farewell tour overshadow that of the league's founder (which it did).
In addition to their illustrious wiffleball career, the Barnburners spent many Saturday afternoons volunteering their time in Southeast DC participating in the RWI program. The results were mixed, and a rescue mission had to be launched to save Jim Shannon from "The Cut" following a misunderstanding during a post-practice craps game. But the programs had its benefits to both parties. The Barnburners provided invaluable tutelage to DC's burgeoning wiffleball youth, while Colin Gannon learned a lot of new words, Ty Fletcher got style advice, and Jack Shannon received a number of new mixtapes.
The Barnburners passed away violently while sweeping their opponent out of the World Series. They will be remembered as an excellent, always-supportive teammates who created a collegial atmosphere for the rest of the league to enjoy, a team who was never sure if its opponents liked them or hated them, and the leading voice of dissidence against outgoing Commissioner Gallaway.
A funeral is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. at Gravelly Point in Arlington, VA, with a reception to follow at CarPool in Ballston. Father Tom the Bartender will officiate the ceremony. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Barnburner's life. Flowers and condolences can be sent to 123 Suck Our Ass Dr.
