Web Gems

Weekly Web Gems

Each week we’ll be voting on a Web Gem to recognize the best defensive plays. Sure, maybe it should be called a hand gem, or a palm gem, possibly even a finger gem, but we’re calling it a web gem.

The league office isn’t watching hours and hours of game footage each week, so it’s up to YOU, yes you, the reader of this website to submit nominations. The only plays nominated will be chosen from the ones that you submit to us for consideration.

Nominations can be made by anyone, manager, player, fan, rival wiffleball league, and are due by NOON each Thursday. The league office will review all nominees and submit up to five of them to be voted on by the public. Voting will be open from Friday until 10 AM on Sunday.

Submissions can be made by sending an email to webgem@potomacwiffleball.org, and MUST include the youtube link to the game, as well as the time (minutes and seconds) where the play occurs.

Web Gems (Sp14): Week 4

Written by - Posted 2014-05-21 01:46 in Web Gems

DEADLINE: VOTES ARE DUE AT NOON FRIDAY

Greg Hudson Diving Catch
Hudson sprints and dives to make a good catch (Even though blocked by the catcher). This dive also injured Hudson’s ribs, which still make him day-to-day on the roster.

Chris Smyth Double Play
On a popfly, Smyth makes the first out then turns and pegs the runner for the rare double play.

Hamlett Lays Out
Proving that every play is important, Hamlett sprints for a foul ball and lays his body out for an amazing diving catch.

Hamlett Sliding Catch
Two nominations in one week. Hamlett playing the field this time sprints for an opposite hit ball and slides under to make it look easy.

Jack Shannon Fall/Dive
Sure, it might look like a mess, but it was the last out of a long game, so we’ll let him in here. Shannon falls on the ball to secure the game against Superman’s Wheelchair. Was he bobbling?

Web Gems (Sp14): Week 2

Written by - Posted 2014-05-02 12:01 in Web Gems

DEADLINE: VOTES ARE DUE AT 10 AM SUNDAY

Brett Shegogue Saves a Run
Not sure what Greg Hudson was thinking here, but an amazing relay and peg at the plate by Brett here to save a run early on.

Zach Carter Double Play
After a recovered fumble, Zach gets the force and throws a last second peg home to get the out right as Fantasia crosses the plate.

Chuggin’ Chorizo Relay Out
Great leaping catch by rookie John Closs over the fence robbing a home run by throwing the ball in play, followed by the relay throw by John Closs, after hoping the fence back into play, to Kenny Golaszewski, who pegged a diving Sam Smith at the plate.

Matt Dreyfus Diving Catch
With the wind blowing hard right, Matt was able to slide under this line drive and make an out in a close game.

Greg Hudson Diving Catch
Just as Matt’s catch showed us, the wind was rough on red, taking this ball further out, forcing Hudson to dive under it.

Web Gems: Week 1 (Sp14)

Written by - Posted 2014-04-25 10:39 in Web Gems

DEADLINE: VOTES ARE DUE AT 10 AM SUNDAY

Sam Smith Diving Out
Rookie team One Hit Wonders get their first nomination of the year. Sam Smith is able to sprint from the pitcher’s mound to pick up and stop a possible double from Kerby.

Besley Bashers Running Catch
Sure, this might’ve been a sacrifice fly when it was said in done. But, that is still an impressive running catch by Alex Cohn.

One Hit Wonders Face Peg
Keeven is a long tenured player, so he’s seen it all. But what he didn’t see coming was a peg in the face from roughly 3 feet away by Andrew Schenkel.

Nick West One Handed Catch
Hudson had a great day at the plate, and possibly could’ve had another home run on the day if it wasn’t for the amazing one handed catch by Nick West here.

Keeven Robs a Hom Run
Keeven had to make up for his face peg — so he goes to the wall on this one to bring back a sure home run ball.

Web Gems: Week 7 (Su13)

Written by - Posted 2013-09-28 09:23 in Web Gems

DEADLINE: VOTES ARE DUE AT 10 AM SUNDAY

Brett Over the Shoulder Grab
Racing into foul territory, Brett makes it look easy as he snags this fly ball — and avoids the tree (just off screen).

Mackey’s Diving Catch
It’s always nice to have a catcher to pick up the slack on some foul balls — Mackey of Suns Out did just that. Diving to make this catch in the batter’s box.

Rotach Saves a HomeRun
Ha’Chi crushes this ball sky high — only to have it come down into Rotach’s outstretched hand as he robs them of a homerun.

Moose Save a Run (and game)
This play would end up saving the game for Moose as Joe Cokey makes a perfect throw from right field to home — easily tagging the runner.

Brett Armpit Double Play
The double play is a rare find. Here, Brett gets a line drive to his armpit, catches it, and strolls over to make the tag at first for the double play.

Web Gems: Week 6 (Su13)

Written by - Posted 2013-09-25 10:59 in Web Gems

DEADLINE: VOTES ARE DUE AT NOON FRIDAY (SPECIAL TIME)

  • Adriano Cut Off Peg – Playing in the outfield, Adriano chases a ball down the line — letting it get behind him ends up helping him out. Rounding 2nd, a Canvasser is gunned down by a perfect strike to the pitcher and an easy tag.
  • Adriano Sliding Catch – With his back on the fence, Adriano sprints in to make a sliding catch at 2nd on an awkwardly hit ball.
  • Kerby Pegs a Nasty Boy – Trying to stretch a single into a double, Adriano hesitates rounding first before going to second. That hesitation give Kerby just enough time to peg Adriano on the foot just before he gets to second.
  • Brett Peg at Home – Early on in the game against Superman’s Wheelchair, Brett makes a heads up play and easily hits Todd running home with a perfect peg.
  • Edgar Tag at 2nd – Once again, we see Edgar of DC Twits with a great play in the field. Ground ball past Crawford, Edgar makes the grab and heads up play to tag 2nd.

Web Gems: Week 5 (Su13)

Written by - Posted 2013-09-13 14:25 in Web Gems

DEADLINE: VOTES ARE DUE AT 10 AM SUNDAY

  • Brian Edgar Diving Catch – Brian is still in his rookie season for the DC Twits, but he has consistently been making plays like this thus far. Diving to catch Matt Gagnon’s would be single, Brian makes the catch and avoids falling into 2nd base.
  • Mazur Peg to Save a Run – This seems to be happening a lot this year — better peg accuracy or just bad base running? Either way, off a missed peg from 2nd to 3rd, Mazur picks up the loose ball and quickly pegs the runner JUST in time (helps their catcher blocked the plate too).
  • Kearns “Swipe of the Paw” – Comebackers are always tough for a pitcher, but Kearns of the Besley Bashers makes this one look easy. Almost bare-handing it, he quickly recovers for an easy out.
  • Kearns Pegs Ha’Chi at Home – Another Kearns play here as he seems to be carrying Besley through the season. After a hit off the fence, and picking up a poor cut off throw, Kearns turns and fires to hit Ha’Chi before reaching home pretty easily.

Web Gems: Week 4 (Su13)

Written by - Posted 2013-09-05 11:41 in Web Gems

DEADLINE: VOTES ARE DUE AT 10 AM SUNDAY

  • Turner Pegs a Nasty Boy – Off a bloop hit into right, Adam Turner picks up the ball and races towards home. Taking his time and waiting til the very last second (more dramatic that way), Adam pegs a sliding/diving/falling Nasty Boy just before tagging home.
  • Flowers with a Diving Catch – While the Moose Knuckles get little love when it comes to voting, Flowers is one of the best fielders in the league. Here again, showing his range racing back to make a great snag of a long fly ball.
  • Dreyfus Sprints for the Catch – This ball was hit off the end of the bat and then caught by the wind — taking it to short. While it looks like Alex could’ve just strolled over and made an easy catch — Dreyfus sprints in from right to make a sliding catch (and probably tearing his knee up in the process).
  • Smyth Diving Catch – Chris Smyth saves Zach Carter’s OBA with a nice diving grab. To pay him back, Cater immediately lets him know he blocked the camera on the play. But, we can “kinda” make out the catch anyway.

Web Gems: Week 3 (Su13)

Written by - Posted 2013-08-27 09:37 in Web Gems

Only two nominations for Week 3. We must do better folks. Make sure you send us your good plays.

ONE TIME EXTENDED DEADLINE: VOTES ARE DUE AT NOON ON THURSDAY

  • Game Saving Double Play – Master Batters had nobody out and runners at 1st and 2nd in a scoreless game in the bottom of the 6th. Kris Garcia smartly steps on second for the force, but Zach Carter beats the throw to the pitcher to avoid the traditional double play at first. So, Tony Morin has to go the long way and peg the runner a step before home plate. The Canvassers won 1-0 in the 8th after forcing extras with this play.
  • Crawford Diving Catch -After giving up a run against the Canvassers on a wild throw by Hudson (even though he should’ve been called back but ump decided not to call it/Twits didn’t get challenge in in time) — Crawford quickly recovered. Making a diving one handed over the shoulder catch look easy, Crawford deserves this nomination.

Written by - Posted 2013-08-16 17:40 in Web Gems

VOTES ARE DUE AT 10 AM ON SUNDAY

  • Andy During Steals a HR – Someone (Nick West) finally hit a solid ball off of Adriano, and where does it end up? Right into Andy During’s home run saving hands.
  • Matt Punts the Ball – First run of the season off Gagnon…and he did not take it too well. I’ll let that clip speak for itself. Not only did the Master Batters submit it, but even Matt did. I still cannot figure out why he didn’t keep running the bases that entire time either.
  • Brian Edgar Diving Catch 2.0 – Rookie Brian Edgar has been playing the field in place of Greg Hudson now for two straight weeks — with plays like this (nominated consecutive weeks now), it’s easy to see why.
